NASA releases ten years of solar timelapse


NASA released a timelapse video that illustrates the surface activity of the Sun in ten years.

Lasting for 61 minutes, this amazing video was produced from high resolution images taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft in the past decade. Every second on video represents one day at the center of the Solar System.

Using one photo from each observation, from 2 June 2010 to 1 June 2020, you will see 87 thousand portraits in total. The background music, entitled Solar Observer, was made by musician Lars Leonhard.

SDO collects these images using various wavelengths of light. Taking pictures every 0.75 seconds, SDO has collected a staggering 425 million photos since it was launched on February 11, 2010 — a total of 20 million gigabytes of data.

With these photos, we can see magnetic eruptions and bursts of solar energy on the surface of the Sun. Tracking this activity is very important to understand more about how the Sun functions and how it affects life in the Solar System.

There are still many things we do not understand about the Sun - including the behavior of the coronas. Observations such as those made by SDO can help find the answer faster.
